Why was my soda can ¾ empty before i opened it?

We had a case of sprite that was ancient sitting in the cupboard. Most of the tins were almost empty! I thought it was just all flat and that maybe somehow there was some minute leakage over time through the tin, but there was no rust or stickiness on the outside.
