It's a creative subreddit about random thoughts we have, and is the subreddit that made me interested in using Reddit. Posts about politics are banned, and it makes the subreddit much better - you don't have to stress about politics when browsing through it and the posts are usually of a high quality.
r/AskReddit - it has some great questions and sometimes they answers are extremely interesting.

I disagree with anon 4chan is a shitshow, reddit has some pretty great and interesting subreddits, the default subs are not something to judge the entire site by reddit can be anything you want it to be, 4chan is the same few boards and endless porn and toxic preteens.
anyways I would suggest looking for subs about your interests or hobbies.
